Walking into Aka Sushi for the first time made it clear this place is sophisticated. This is certainly not a mom-and-pop sushi place: this is the place you take someone to have a serious talk about where your relationship is headed.
Sushi can often be a difficult meal to know what you’re doing. The language, for starters, can be confusing. What is sushi vs. sashimi? And which is the dining experience you’re looking for? If you’re not sure, Aka Sushi’s staff strives to be nothing less than excessively helpful. In fact, there’s a number on placards around the restaurant that allow you to anonymously text the manager on duty about your experience. I tried it (of course I tried it) and the manager was very pleased to hear his wait staff was so amiable.
You know when you walk into a sushi bar and you can smell the fish? The Aka Sushi experience is far from that, premium-grade fish. The ambience is clean and refined; the dark walls actually seem to make the place feel larger. There’s a massive selection of appetizers—some of which are standard fare like edamame and miso soup, but some are new inventions and others still are obscure and experimental. There’s a little something for every palate here.
And the greatest part is—it’s a bargain. They have a daily Happy Hour from 3-7 and a reverse happy hour from 9-close, featuring premium sushi. Basically, it’s really hard to come here and have it not be Happy Hour. Oh did I mention, Saturdays and Sundays? It’s Happy Hour all day long! I’ll see you and your—have you defined the relationship yet?—there.
