, the beautiful neighborhood just outside the Beltway, continues to expand and maintain a great reputation. Technically, only “Old Katy” has been annexed by Houston, but most of the Katy area is part of Houston’s Extra Territorial Jurisdiction and as population increases, the area may be annexed entirely in the coming years.

Getting its start as Cane Island in 1872, the outlying area of Katy began development in the early 1900’s as farmers’ planted successful crops of cotton and peanuts. However, rice quickly became a favorite crop. In fact, the first concrete rice driers in the state of Texas were built in Katy in 1944 and still stand as landmarks. Today, there are more than 14,000 Katy residents, but the large area still has a small town atmosphere.

The area is an aggregate for middle-class living with a median family income from around $58k/year to around $67k/year average (depending on who you ask). The average resident is around 36 years old with about 46% of households with a child under the age of 18, almost 64% are married couples, and the average family size is 3 people.

The political climate, too, is varied with almost an even split in 2012 between Democrats and Republicans—a difficult level of assortment to find in this red state. Faiths are not particularly varied although the Christian sect sees quite a bit of diversity at about 36% Catholic, 28% Baptist, 10% Methodist and other faiths are at around 26%.

As Katy’s population grows—and it grows as fast as Houston expands—the more common it is to find happy commuters to and from the heart of downtown. And with I-10’s completion a couple of years ago, the commute is easier than ever. However, more equally common is the number of businesses that have headquarters in the relatively inexpensive Katy area contributing to its size and autonomy.
