Placid and austere, shady and cloistered, Bunker Hill Village is ideal for starting a family. From the top-notch schools available both private and public down to the atmosphere, it’s not hard to imagine a brood that looks like you riding tricycles up and down the streets.
For one thing American FactFinder tells us that 83% of the residents here are married couples and nearly half of all households have children under the age of 18 living within them. The serene area, settled by German farmers, still has a park-like arboreal feel. For another, Bunker Hill is surrounded and yet insulated by Houston.
The paradox is that Bunker Hill Village is technically an independent municipality and not part of the City of Houston. In the 1950’s, Spring Branch failed to form a municipality, and Bunker Hill Village incorporated as a result. However, oddly enough, “Bunker Hill Village” is not an acceptable city designation for mail addressed to places in Bunker Hill Village.
As a result, Bunker Hill Village really does have all the convenience of being in a city with very few of the drawbacks. In fact, Forbes called Bunker Hill Village one of Houston’s “Top Suburbs to Live Well” in 2008.
Living well, indeed, is a bit of a prerequisite for the area. As of 2010, statistics show that the median household income is approximately $217k; the median family income is more than $250k and the per-capita income for families is around $100k. It’s a great place to grow a family from a good foundation!
