We love Houston—but its allure has been lost to many people for years. We’re not Austin, the Mecca of the liberal, alternative lifestyle of the Southern red states that really stands out—and we’re not trying to be. But, that means we’ve often been overlooked as another Southern City, USA, skipped over as one of the best places to live in the nation.
Nonetheless, in the past 3 years, our accolades have started piling up. According to the Huffington Post, we’ve surpassed Los Angeles and New York City as the most diverse city in the US. And, we were rated #1 on Forbes’ list of coolest cities to live in 2012. People have started to look at us, and they’re beginning to understand that although we’re not Austin or Chicago, New York or Los Angeles, Portland or San Francisco, Houston is a powerhouse– it’s a place for families, solid education, self expression, unique dining and big employment opportunities.
