Houston is full of culture, fantastic places to eat, shop and enjoy fresh air, especially Downtown. EaDo—short for East Downtown, also called the East Downtown Management District—is an important part of Houston’s history and gorgeous landscape.
According to the Houston Chronicle, in the 1930’s Cantonese immigrants moved to Old Chinatown (then, just Chinatown), which was, at the time part of the Old Third Ward and is now East Downtown. By the 80’s East Downtown was becoming increasingly more expensive and many of the Asian businesses that were established in the area began to move to Southwest Houston, leading to the forming of Chinatown as we know it today. Houston Press informed us that by the late 2000’s the area had received a new name, since ‘Chinatown’ no longer seemed the right fit for the booming neighborhood, and by 2010, artists had flooded the area.
In fact, EaDo has been said to look “like an art installation” itself and professes to be the “Art and Soul” of the city! Maybe it’s because the amenities are so inspiring: EaDo is within walking distance of Discovery Green, Minute Maid Park, George R. Brown Convention Center, Toyota Center, Houston Pavilions, and The Shops at Houston Center. Transportation here ensures all walks of life are able to enjoy it, as it’s nestled easily between highways for easy access and has METRO transit buses and, soon, METRO light rail!
East Downtown is also situated near Houston’s largest employers: Downtown Houston, Texas Medical Center and the Houston Ship Channel. It’s an epicenter for culture, for entertainment and for urban living. Come to Houston and check it out!
