If you’ve noticed an uptick in the amount of comedy shows going on all over Houston, from local bars, to live music venues, you’re not alone. There has been a huge swell in not only the amount of shows happening around town, but also the caliber of talent that is coming through.
Gabe Bravo and Andrew Youngblood have made it their personal mission to breathe new life into the comedy scene here in Houston; one that to many already had it’s heyday come and go when the likes of Bill Hicks, Sam Kinison, Jimmy Pineapple, and Andy Huggins, all members of the Texas Outlaw Comics. A few deaths, a few moves, and really, a death in the scene overall in Houston, left the 4th largest city in the U.S. to shut many of the local comedy club’s doors.
Starting with simple open mic nights held all over town on almost any night you need something to do, and working their way up to booking big acts for Houston’s Whatever Fest, they have revitalized Houston as an inviting city comedians want to perform in. Their latest venture is another festival, but this time it’s solely focusing on comedy, you are invited to the Come and Take It Comedy Festival.
They’ve booked huge acts such as Maria Bamford, Norm McDonald, Todd Barry and sketch comedy troupe, the Whitest Kids U Know. Not to leave behind Houston comics, the festival will also be featuring a healthy lineup of Houston based comics including Gabe Bravo himself, and the widely popular Whiskey Brothers Podcast including Sam Demaris, Rob Mungle, John Wessling, and Slade Ham, all also performing individual sets. If you haven’t heard these guys, we definitely recommend checking out their podcast, though listener beware, it’s definitely not PG-13.
The festival will be a two day event that will encompass all three rooms of Warehouse Live, a popular east side venue that is home to a once a month open mic as well. The ticket prices are still sitting at early bird pricing, as the event isn’t until January 24th-25th, so you can still nab two-day general admission passes for only $45 and VIP admission for $75. VIP will get you early entry, access to special VIP bar areas, and guaranteed seating for all of the ballroom and studio shows. If you were to buy tickets to even catch two of the headlining acts performing this year, you’d pay more than the cost of the early bird General admission, so grab your tickets now and be a part of the first year that Houston puts it’s name back on the map in the comedy scene.
