Sharpstown was a groundbreaking enterprise when Frank Sharp began development of this master-planned neighborhood in the 1950’s. Today, almost 100,000 people call the neighborhood home as it has exploded onto the scene with its amenities, transportation, and overall diversity.
When it was started in 1955, Frank Sharp had a vision that was quite idiosyncratic for the time. The community he planned had media coverage and focus on it at its inception and as it grew, many other communities adopted the same model.
But, Sharpstown isn’t just the original mold for a cookie cutter neighborhood—at its start, Sharpstown was a new way of planning neighborhoods and was far enough from the center of Houston that it could be considered suburbs. However, as Houston has grown outward, Sharpstown, though it hasn’t moved, has become closer to the heart of the city.
With its unique position near freeways allowing easy access to almost anywhere inside the loop within minutes, Sharpstown has always been uniquely suited for residents. Thousands of small businesses help the community thrive while providing thousands of services and products, keeping everything residents need in their backyard. However, Houston’s expansion has made Sharpstown even more and more valuable, and its sturdy, well-made original homes have withstood the test of time.
In the 80’s and 90’s, that meant middle class residents moved further out to places like Sugar Land, Katy and Missouri City. The exodus hit the area hard for a while until Chinatown, which was located near the East End and filled with the booming businesses of first-generation immigrants, began to be forced out and needed to relocate. This caused Sharpstown and the Southwest area of Houston to became the birthplace not only of new Chinatown, but of Harwin and many new unique businesses.
Currently, Sharpstown has its own management district for the beautification of the streets and new buildings and businesses that continue to expand there, as well as departments dedicated to making the area safe and an easily accessible place to live and work. The standards to deliver a stylish aesthetic now that the neighborhood’s tone has changed from an outlying suburb to an urban residential pocket continue to impress.
Overall, Sharpstown is just more than another great place to live in the even Greater Houston area, it’s a place to become a part of a thriving community.
