Bunker Hill Elementary School is tucked away on a quiet corner of Bunker Hill Village. If you blink you could miss the quiet parking lot. The huge, old trees block the sounds of children on the far playground.
This quiet little elementary school, unassuming though it seems, is outshining many schools in terms of academic performance. It was ranked better than 90% of elementary schools in Texas in 2014. And, it’s the 5th best elementary school in Spring Branch ISD and 441st in the state. Bunker Hill’s focus on technology, life skills, individual strengths and team work may be what keeps this school at the top of the list.
Interestingly, the demographics here also far less homogenous than the surrounding Bunker Hill Village that has a population of almost 92% white; compared with Bunker Hill Elementary at 63%. The student-teacher ratio here is better than the state max, too, at 17.5:1 compared to the Texas maximum of 22:1.
Parent reviews of this school are on the whole glowing, though some of the commentary on staff has been less rosy. One parent felt staff had flippant attitudes towards bullying and special accommodations. However, another parent lauded the excellence of the PTA. Just last year the school received an award from the Anti-Defamation League for teaching students respect and how to be productive members of society.
Bunker Hill, a sleepy little elementary in a pocket size community has all the makings of an excellent school with resources to make the most of that early education.
