Cloverleaf Elementary, the recent winner of Gallery Furniture’s 2014 Teachers Lounge Makeover Giveaway, is a winner in Galena Park ISD of its own accord!
In the Galena Park School District, Cloverleaf is the second oldest elementary school and was started in 1943 with just 10 teachers, 6 classrooms in 2 buildings. By 2008, the staff had expanded to 80 teachers and 69 classrooms in addition to acquiring amenities like a lunchroom, learning center, multi-purpose room and a clinic.
Cloverleaf Elementary has also been steeped in Texas tradition for more than 70 years. In 2003, the Cloverleaf Library was renamed to the “Frances Irene Nadolney Library” in dedication to the family that gave the land to Galena Park in 1942 for the express purpose of building Cloverleaf Elementary.
But, Cloverleaf isn’t just a part of Houston’s history: it’s creating leaders for our future. Cloverleaf Elementary is committed to gifted and talented students, providing summer programs, art and special events and holds itself to a standard for educating and facilitating each child’s potential. According to the Texas Education Agency’s 2013 Accountability Summary Report, the school received distinction in Academic Achievement in Mathematics with 67% of students falling in the top quartile, even though 95% of its 828 total students are economically disadvantaged and 71% are English Language learners.
Another gem of Cloverleaf that’s been regaled over and over in its history and in its online reviews is the active PTA. This particular powerhouse, 4 of whose prior members have served as Galena Park Community Council Presidents, supports theater and author presentations, building the Cloverleaf Park, acquiring the school’s clinic, and overseeing the Cloverleaf Citizens on Patrol Group.
Texas State PTA has repeatedly recognized Cloverleaf Elementary for its exemplary involvement, awarding them the Texas State PTA Health Concerns Award as well as the prestigious Texas State PTA Parent Education Award. One former PTA member was elected to the Texas PTA Executive Board of Directors and one of Cloverleaf’s former PTA Presidents was elected Area 11 PTA President (covering 11 counties), serving one of only 18 PTA Areas in Texas.
The education at Cloverleaf Elementary seeks to support students and overcome obstacles in the way of a child’s success, turning them into tools and leading by example to lift up the great leaders of tomorrow. All in all, we understand why the Cloverleaf Elementary educator deserved that new teacher’s lounge!
