St. Agnes Academy is a girls’ Catholic college preparatory school for grades 9-12. The academy is committed to the altruistic tradition of Jesus and the development of confident young women. While it comes from a strong Dominican and Catholic foundation, the school itself seeks to develop the minds of future leaders of social justice, not necessarily future Catholics, and is devoted passionately to that cause.
The school’s goals page reads like a veritable Magna Carta, filled with social values that are priceless lessons for young women. With emphasis on the educational development not just of the mind, but of the whole person, St. Agnes’ doctrine stresses each young woman’s value, intellect and especially their singularity: a far cry from the catholic school trope you see in movies.
St. Agnes Academy also honors spiritual autonomy, which I found mentioned several times on their website: St. Agnes is “committed to serving a diverse student body representing a variety of socioeconomic, cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds.”
The ‘development of the whole person’ is cornerstone to their education philosophy. They also have some very notable alumni, including Hanan Alattar, an operatic soprano, Patricia Gras, a journalist you might remember from ‘Living Smart with Patricia Gras,” and Alexis Bledel of Gilmore Girls fame (all 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls are coming to Netflix on October 1st).
Although the school year has already begun, it’s never too early to begin looking into schools for give your children a great education opportunity!
