Not strictly speaking, the city of Sealy is part of the Houston-Woodlands-Sugarland metropolitan area, located about 50 miles West of Downtown Houston. However, don’t be deterred, the Greater Houston Area that spirals out from the center, is slightly larger than New Jersey: there’s plenty of Houston between downtown and Sealy.
Sealy, at around 10 square miles, was bought from San Felipe in 1879 and sold to the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad, and majority stock holder George Sealy gave it its name. The town grew when Daniel Haynes commissioned a cotton-filled mattress and started the Sealy Mattress Company in 1881.
According to statistics from 2012, the population is around 34 years old, with a $46,000 annual household income and a moderately diverse population: about 48% white, almost 39% Hispanic and approximately 12% black.
Although Sealy is host to Blinn Junior College, in addition to having elementary, intermediate, middle and high schools all independently zoned to this area, the city is quaint with a small-town feel. With the collegiate economy, there are a number of unique businesses and farmers markets where you can obtain locally grown, farm-fresh produce.
In all, Sealy is blossoming as Houston blossoms. While it is in the outer limits of the greater Houston area now, it isn’t necessarily going to stay that way, so it’s an excellent place to invest in a future that could be quite a booming epicenter in 20 years—or just enjoy the sleepy town with the city-amenities. That is, while you can!
