Southeast Houston is a conglomerate of many illustrious neighborhoods in the Greater Houston area. Annexed in 1950, its prestige is only matched by its affordability and diversity.
One of the main draws to this side of town is the largest medical center in the world, The Texas Medical Center. The residential aspects of Southeast Houston aren’t completely fleshed out yet but it’s certainly a growing area for urban living.
The Third Ward of Houston is a cultural epicenter, especially for parts of Houston’s African American and hip-hop communities, with talent being recognized across the nation. According to NPR, The area is fought to maintain its legacy by enacting deed restrictions to prevent some of the gentrification and rapid development and growing pains that its neighboring Fourth Ward experienced.
Other neighborhoods include Riverside Terrace, University Oaks, and Washington Terrace. Southeast Houston is even the locale of the Consulate-General of Mexico. Important landmarks like the HPD ‘South Central Patrol Division,’ the division that serves most of Houston, is located in the area, as well as the original Firehouse 33, which Arch-ive.org tells us, stayed in its original location for so long it was among the last to relocate to upgraded facilities.
Even higher education thrives here—the University of Houston has part of its campus in Southeast Houston, and it’s one of the largest schools in Texas. The campus in Southeast Houston is the most comprehensive and hosts almost 40,000 students each year. Texas Southern University, founded in 1927, is also located in Southeast Houston. It’s one of the largest historically black colleges in the United States.
Whatever you’re looking for, Southeast Houston has it all—affordable housing, ample amounts of culture and heritage, ambitious young people, the best doctors in the world, and a police force that leads the city. Southeast Houston has it all!
