Houston has 88 ‘Super Neighborhoods’ to its name, covering areas of high business, somewhat low residency. Super Neighborhood 87 is officially the Upper Kirby/Greenway Plaza neighborhood area.
This area has lots of commercial pursuits stationed here: for example Kellogg moved its headquarters from New York City to Greenway Plaza, former home of the energy corridor. However, as businesses expand, so do high-end residential opportunities. The Upper Kirby area has seen the erection of a large luxury apartment complex.
In fact, Upper Kirby has a rich history as the home of the River Oaks Garden Club Forum of Civics is listed on National Register of Historic Places and was once owned by Will Hogg, son of Governor Jim Hogg and brother of Ima Hogg. It is perhaps for this reason Upper Kirby, shortened to UK, set up red telephone booths to link this historic part of town to another richly venerable place: London.
And as the residences grow, so do neighborhood staples. Lakewood Church, owned by Joel Osteen, bought the Compaq center and turned it into a state-of-the-art mega-church, which rakes in an estimated 32 million dollars in donations from it’s more than 43,000 parishoners each year.
This part of town, though undeniably commercial, is starting to develop a generous appeal to potential residents by expanding the appeal to more than just the excessively prosperous, but also the up-and-coming elite. It keeps expanding to meet the needs of consumers, not just tycoons.
