If you’re looking for something to enjoy with the kids or a special someone, the worst kept secret in Houston is Moody Gardens’ Festival of Lights! Running from November 14th the way until January 10th, Moody Gardens’ light show is the Houston equivalent of the Rockefeller Plaza Christmas Tree.
There are more than ONE MILLION lights with sweet little displays and lots of holiday music as I recall—it’s a family tradition, and I don’t think my family is the only one. According to the Moody Gardens website there are over 100 displays for your viewing pleasure and there’s also live entertainment!
And did I mention the ice skating rink? And you can rent skates for just $7. Or you can pay $10.75 for a Festival Admission that includes your ice skate rental fee. There’s also the Arctic Ice Slide that if it looks anything like it sounds, it will be fast, fun and freezing cold. In other words, probably the closest thing to sledding you’re going to find in Houston! One ride down the slide is $7, and $20 for 10 slides, or you can spend $25 and slide down as many times as your heart desires all day!
If you’ve got kiddos and the Galleria scares you senseless this time of year (it should, but that can definitely be part of the fun), get their (or your!) picture taken with Santa right at Moody Gardens! It’s a holiday epicenter for all things wintery, wholesome, and fun! Those things don’t do it for you? There’s also a Holiday Buffet and a train ride which sounds so cool it’s… ice cold (I had to). Moody Gardens has it all!
Obviously this all happens after dark (from 6pm to 10pm), but since darkness is falling at around 5pm these days, enjoying the Festival of Lights should be easy to get out to Galveston and get back home in time for milk and cookies!
