ComedySportz Houston has delivered family-friendly entertainment for years in the Houston community—23 years, in fact. Offering Friday and Saturday shows at their City Centre location, they’ve always had excellent family-friendly ‘improv’ entertainment (short for improvised; meaning there’s no script and none of the players know what they’re going to do beforehand). It’s in much the same vein as “Who’s Line is It Anyway?” and some of the players are just downright genius.
A standard show has two ‘teams’ (going with a loose sports metaphor—hence ComedySportz) and each team either works together to make the scene they’ve been given the most entertaining, or they compete against each other in head-to-head challenges, and, of course, hijinks ensue. But, it’s not the kind of show where you stay quiet and watch the masters work—the audience is asked for suggestions, sometimes used as props, and decides who wins by laughter. They’ve also started a Game Show Mash Up that looks wildly interactive, although I haven’t gone (yet)!
Nevertheless, that’s not all ComedySportz has to offer—in fact, ComedySportz offers way more than just their awesome Friday/Saturday family-friendly shows. With gigs all over town—like the Holiday Inn Houston West-Energy Corridor and at Comicpalooza— ComedySportz has taken their talent all over the Houston scene. They have everything from children’s shows to classes.
In fact, their new UNSCRIPTED chooses a popular movie or story and ComedySportz veterans improvise the major plot elements that transforms it into an oddly recognizable though hilarious format. It’s some clever sport! I saw their Star Wars at Comicpalooza two years ago—it was definitely PG-13, so be sure to pay attention to their ratings, but it had me in stitches. The upcoming UNSCRIPTED is Aladdin—and I’m willing to bet it’ll make your cheeks hurt.
While it may seem like the players are brilliant wits (and no doubt they are… I think I fall in love every time I go), they’re the kind of wits that are committed to helping you discover your wittier side! ComedySportz offers classes and shows you how to play their games and become a successful improviser both in the comedy arena and in real life. They also offer team-building exercises, a high school league and classes for children to get those kids thinking on their feet early!
There is something for everyone at ComedySportz—whether it’s for a date (or a series of them if you take their classes), to get the family out of the house together, to impress the in-laws or to show the other board members a good time. You’re guaranteed to leave with a smile on your face.
