When someone talks about the Houston Museum of Natural Science, your brain may automatically picture the Museum District. And, for those of you living out in the ever-growing West side of town, that may not be a trek you’re looking forward to making with the kids too often. But, did you know that there is a second location in Sugar Land?

The Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land opened its new doors in 2009 and has thrived ever since. Throughout the year, the museum offers many comprehensive exhibitions to keep your family constantly learning, such as their current special exhibition, the Crystals of India.  You can check out never-before-seen perfectly formed natural mineral crystals from India’s Deccan Plateau, a large geological formation in the southern part of the country, from now until May 10, 2015.

On the other hand, if the ocean is your thing,  HMNS at Sugar Land has a giant 2,000 gallon aquarium that houses a wide variety of live fish, coral, starfishes, sea anemone, and crustaceans. And not to leave out the hands on learners and explorers, the museum also invites you to their interactive dig pit where you can dive in and uncover dinosaur bones and then identify them through the chart.

Since the museum offers so many other exhibitions based on science,  featuring, the Earth, nature, space, life, paleontology and more, your family can spend time exploring and finding what interests you the most. One of the rotating features you can check out every visit is the Children’s Art Gallery, which features a rotation of art from our talented local schools. If you have school aged children, one of the events that is held year-round (excluding upcoming holiday weeks) is the P.A.W.S. Reading Program.  Kids of any age and reading ability get to read books to trained therapy dogs. Help your kids become confident readers who love to read aloud by letting them read to these great listeners.

We are so fortunate, as a city, to be able to host two amazing locations from our local science museum! If you are able to, check out both soon and let us know what you think in the comments. The Sugar Land location certainly lives up to the reputation the Museum District location has set forth of a great educational space for visitors of any age.
