What is a Wabash? I get this question a lot when I suggest it as something to do. Typically, if someone has had a rough week, I’ll really insist. It’s a surprise I save for friends when they need something sweet and heartwarming to do that doesn’t venture into the territory of saccharine inspirational movies.
Wabash is an organic feed, garden, and hardware store with antiques and other bric-a-brac if you want to get technical, but Wabash it is also Houston’s best kept secret because it is next to impossible to be sad in this beautiful place.
Located in the middle of Washington Avenue, this country escape has hundreds of odds and ends to decorate a garden with little ornaments and bridges, plus they have the makings of any kind of garden you want: fruit, trees, herbs, succulents to flowers.
You can also find feed of almost any variety at Wabash. You decided to adopt a squirrel? I’m pretty sure nobody recommends keeping one as a pet, but I bet you could find what you needed there. They have natural pet supplies and foods, pigs’ ears and big bones for your pups. Wabash even has fresh-laid eggs for your own plate!
But, the best part of Wabash isn’t just all the wonderful stuff you can get: it’s their adoptable animals. There are usually some adorable puppies and multitudinous kittens to choose from however, this isn’t the standard or depressing pet adoption day at a big pet depot. When was the last time you saw newly hatched chicks and ducklings? Or embraced soft, snuggly rabbits? On one of my visits to Wabash there were some full grown geese, and they’ve got LOTS of chickens of almost every variety, in addition to doves, pigeons and one gigantic parrot who has plenty to say.
Every time I go I feel like a little kid in a petting zoo: enthusiastic, content, and engaged. Whatever you’re looking for, you’re sure to find a smile at Wabash, even on your worst day!
