Houston has plenty of coffee shops and smoothie places, especially with fast-beverages being standard fare for the busy lifestyle of the typical Houstonian. The Teahouse, however, changed the face of the beverage market when it came to Houston in 2000.
Tapioca, for those of you who are not familiar, are little starch balls that add a little bit of sweet texture to things like lumpy, delicious tapioca pudding. Typically, they’re milky and translucent in texture, and are sometimes called ‘pearls.’ “Bubble Tea” incorporates these tapioca ‘pearls’ into a tea infused with sometimes fruit or milk (or both).
When The Teahouse brought bubble tea to Houston’s mainstream shortly after their first location opened, it brought some much-appreciated texture to the Houston fast-beverage experience. The Teahouse creates their tapioca to be sweeter and more “robust” by adding dark brown sugar and caramel, changing its color to a delectable, rich dark color.
You can also find plenty of cream-teas like Jasmine Green or Black tea, usually with a nondairy creamer, but also featuring dozens of pages of add-ons and substitutes. The teas here come from classics like Peppermint Green Tea all the way down to Rose Tea. With more than 150 items on their standard menu and plenty of ways to make your drink your own thanks to tapioca, pudding, jelly and gelatin, this place has it all!
I love their Thai Iced Tea—it’s the best I’ve tasted in Houston, hands down! But if you’re not sure what to get, The Teahouse prides itself on its excellent customer service. Don’t be shy! They have plenty to recommend and can explain a little bit more about ‘floaters’ (little edible delights you can add to your drink) and flavors to help you find your perfect drink. They even have a satisfaction guaran-tea: like it or exchange it for one you do!
